Caitlyn and Gabriel originally reached out to us to photograph a session in Las Vegas, but during the planning process they asked one of our favorite questions: “Do you travel?” The answer is always yes! 

As a traveling wedding photographer and videographer duo based in Las Vegas, getting the opportunity to document love stories in new places is something we will never turn down. So when they asked if we would be willing to travel to San Diego to capture their Balboa Park wedding, we immediately started packing our bags! 

Their day centered around a beautiful ceremony at St. Francis Chapel inside Balboa Park, followed by portraits throughout the park before celebrating with family and friends at Animae later that evening. While we’ll save the reception for another blog, this post is all about their Balboa Park wedding ceremony and why this iconic San Diego location quickly became one of our favorite places to photograph!

Why We Love a Balboa Park Wedding

Endless Variety for Wedding Photos

One of the first things that stood out to us about Balboa Park is just how much variety exists within a single location. The Spanish-style architecture alone could keep us busy for hours. 

Then you add in the gardens, fountains, courtyards, tree-lined pathways, and greenhouse, and suddenly every corner feels completely different from the last. It creates so many opportunities for wedding photos without needing to force anything. We spent the afternoon exploring as much as we could, and even then it felt like we barely scratched the surface.

You Don’t Have to Leave the Park for Amazing Photos

Balboa Park is huge, but that’s actually part of what makes it such a great wedding location. While the park itself covers a large area, many of its most iconic photo spots are relatively close together. 

Instead of driving all over San Diego looking for different backdrops, couples can stay in one area and still get an incredible amount of variety in their gallery. For wedding days, that’s a huge advantage! Less time worrying about transportation means more time enjoying the day and spending time with the people you love.

Perfect for Couples Who Want History and Character

Balboa Park feels timeless! The historic architecture, lush landscaping, and unique details give the entire space so much personality. It already feels beautiful without needing much added to it, which is something we always appreciate as photographers. If you’re looking for a San Diego wedding venue that feels romantic, classic, and full of character, it’s hard to beat.

A Private First Look at St. Francis Chapel

We started the day meeting Caitlyn inside the bridal suite at St. Francis Chapel while she finished getting ready. After saying our hellos, we quietly slipped away to find Gabriel so we could set up their first look. We decided to have it inside the church before guests arrived, which ended up being the perfect choice. 

First looks are always one of our favorite parts of a wedding day! The moment gives couples a chance to slow down and focus on each other before everything officially begins. The nerves start to settle, the excitement takes over, and for a few minutes it’s just the two of them. We gave Caitlyn and Gabriel plenty of space to have that moment together before moving into portraits around Balboa Park.

Portraits Throughout Balboa Park

One thing became clear very quickly… there is no shortage of photo locations at Balboa Park. Every time we turned a corner, another beautiful backdrop appeared. One minute we were surrounded by architecture, and the next we were walking through gardens or standing near the water. The variety made the entire portrait portion of the day feel effortless!

Thankfully, Caitlyn and Gabriel had an incredible planner helping keep everyone on schedule because Balboa Park can easily tempt you into spending hours exploring. We definitely could have photographed here all day!

Before the ceremony, Caitlyn also shared a first look with her dad. Those moments get us every single time. There is something so special about watching a parent see their child in wedding attire for the first time. It never gets old, and this moment was no exception!

A Balboa Park Wedding Ceremony at St. Francis Chapel

When it was time for the ceremony, guests filled St. Francis Chapel while a harpist played beautiful music throughout the space. With just 90 seats in the chapel, the atmosphere felt intimate and personal from the very beginning.

Caitlyn’s uncle officiated the ceremony, which added another meaningful layer to the day. The two of them exchanged heartfelt vows and shared some truly emotional moments together in front of their closest family and friends.

One of our favorite details happened during the ceremony itself. Instead of simply exchanging vows, Caitlyn and Gabriel also took Polaroid photos of each other. Those same photos later became their cake toppers, which might be one of the most creative wedding details we’ve seen!

After the ceremony, we moved outside the chapel for family portraits and photos with friends. With so many beautiful locations nearby, it was an easy choice to stay close to the church and keep the momentum of the day going.

The Perfect Transition to the Celebration

Once portraits wrapped up, guests climbed aboard a white Old Town Trolley Tours trolley waiting nearby. It was such a fun way to transition from ceremony to reception.

Instead of everyone coordinating separate transportation, the trolley kept the group together and turned the ride into part of the experience. The energy was already building before anyone even arrived at the reception. Little details like that always make a wedding day feel even more connected!

Tips for Planning a Balboa Park Wedding

If you’re considering a wedding at Balboa Park, there are a few things we would recommend: 

1. Build enough portrait time into your schedule. The park offers so many incredible locations that you’ll want time to actually enjoy them.

2. Consider doing a first look. Caitlyn and Gabriel were able to experience a private moment together while also maximizing the amount of time they had for portraits around the park.

3. Hire a planner if it’s within your budget. Balboa Park has so much to offer, and having someone keep the timeline moving allows you to stay present instead of worrying about logistics.
