As a Las Vegas-based photographer and videographer team, we love when our couples reach out for an out-of-state session! This time, we packed our bags and headed to Portland, Oregon, for an intimate engagement session with Lan & Levai at the Portland Art Museum. We captured the entire session on digital photo and video, which gave us the chance to lean into a more cinematic style.
When we photograph engagement sessions, we want our couples to feel like they’re on a date. We don’t want them to spend the entire time posing for the camera or wondering what they’re supposed to do with their hands. Lan & Levai gave us full control over their Portland Art Museum engagement photos, so we wanted to create something that felt cinematic, relaxed, and a little bit like we were third-wheeling their museum date.

We had one main goal for this session: make Lan & Levai feel like they were the last two people on earth. Okay, there were definitely other people there. But we did our best!
We scheduled their Portland Art Museum engagement photos for a weekday right when the museum opened. This gave us the best chance at having more space to ourselves before the museum got busier, and it made a huge difference in the overall experience.
Instead of immediately jumping into portraits, we let Lan & Levai lead the way. They looked at the artwork, talked to each other, sat down, and actually enjoyed being at the museum. We gave them a few prompts throughout the session, but we didn’t want to direct every single movement. That’s what made the session work so well!

One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions is getting to step back a little. Once our couples get comfortable with us, I want them to forget we’re there.
Lan & Levai were able to spend time together without constantly stopping for photos. We followed along, stepped in when we saw something we loved, and let them enjoy the museum in between. It felt much more like a date than a traditional engagement session. And that’s exactly what we were going for!

Adding digital video to this session allowed us to take the cinematic vibes even further. Movement changes the way you experience a story, and video gave us another way to capture the little things that happen between photos. Things like a glance across the room. Walking hand in hand. Sitting together while looking at a piece of art. Those moments don’t need much direction, and they definitely don’t need to be perfectly posed.
That’s where cinematic engagement photos really shine! Instead of creating a collection of images that simply show what you looked like that day, we’re trying to capture what it felt like to spend that day together.

The Portland Art Museum is such a fun option for couples who want engagement photos that feel a little different. When there, you’re surrounded by artwork, interesting architecture, and tons of visual variety.
It’s also a great fit for couples who aren’t necessarily dreaming about a traditional outdoor engagement session. If museums, art, and wandering around a beautiful space together sound more like your idea of a date, this could be such a fun way to document your engagement.
For Lan & Levai, the museum gave us the perfect setting for the story we wanted to create. We weren’t trying to make it look like they were models posing inside a museum. We wanted it to look like they had a day together, and we just happened to be there with our cameras.
If you’re planning a Portland Art Museum engagement session, here are a few tips!
Photography permission isn’t required for engagement photos at the museum, which makes planning the session much easier. That said, we always remind our couples to be respectful of the space. No flash, don’t touch the artwork, and be mindful of other museum guests. You’re still visiting a museum, so we want to make sure we’re documenting your experience without disrupting anyone else’s.
If you want your Portland Art Museum engagement photos to feel more intimate, we strongly recommend going on a weekday. We photographed Lan & Levai right when the museum opened, which gave us a much quieter start to the session. There were still other visitors around, but arriving early meant we had more opportunities to find quieter spaces and move through the museum without constantly working around crowds. You can’t guarantee you’ll have the entire museum to yourself, but choosing the right time can definitely help.
This is probably the biggest tip I can give you. Don’t treat the museum like a backdrop and rush from one photo to the next. Look at the art. Sit down. Talk to each other. Wander around. Let your photographer follow along and step in when they see something worth capturing. The less you worry about doing everything “right,” the more your photos will actually feel like you.

If you’re looking for engagement photos that feel more like a date than a photoshoot, the Portland Art Museum is such a fun option.
