Sam and Chris reached out with an idea that immediately had us saying yes! They wanted their engagement photos at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and before they could even finish explaining their vision, we knew we were already in. This location has been on our bucket list for a while now, so getting to document their cinematic engagement photos here felt like the perfect mix of exciting and meant to be!
From the start, their goal was simple. They didn’t want anything overly posed or structured. They wanted their session to feel like a real experience, something closer to a date than a photoshoot. That intention shaped everything about their session and we fully leaned into what we love most: engagement photos that feel natural, immersive, and completely personal.
And yes, as a West-coast based photographer and videographer team, will absolutely travel for sessions like this! Monterey, California showed off in the best way, and this entire shoot felt like a reminder of why we love documenting love stories in new places.

Cinematic engagement photos always start with a shift in mindset. Instead of focusing on poses or a shot list, the focus is more on your movement, connection, and letting things happen naturally. We always want to create images and videos that feel like a memory rather than something staged!
With Sam and Chris, that came together so easily. They moved through the aquarium the same way they would on any normal day, stopping to look at exhibits, talking, laughing, and just being fully present with each other. That’s what gives cinematic engagement photos their depth. It’s not about perfection, it’s about feeling.
We also decided to experiment a bit during this session and incorporated digital video alongside their photos. While digital videography isn’t something we officially offer right now, it’s something we’ve been exploring more behind the scenes. This felt like the perfect setting to try it out! The movement, the lighting, and the overall energy of the aquarium added so much to that cinematic feel, and it let us tell their story in a slightly different way.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of those locations that completely transforms the way a session feels. The lighting is moody, the colors lean deep blue and green, and everything is constantly shifting. Between the reflections in the glass and the movement of the water, it creates an environment that feels almost unreal!
For cinematic engagement photos, this kind of setting makes a huge difference. The light is always changing, and the movement from the water adds depth that you simply can’t recreate anywhere else. It gives every frame texture, motion, and life without needing anything forced.
Sam and Chris leaned into the date vibes the entire time! Instead of rushing through or trying to hit specific spots, they took their time and treated the experience like an actual date. That’s what made their Monterey Bay Aquarium engagement photos feel so natural and story-driven.

If you’re considering doing your engagement session at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, there are a few things to keep in mind. The biggest one is simple: it gets busy.
We photographed this session on a Saturday right when the doors opened, and there were already at least 100 people lined up outside. The energy inside picked up quickly, which is something to plan for if you’re hoping for a quieter experience.
If your schedule allows for it, we definitely recommend choosing a weekday. It gives you more space to move around and makes it easier to settle into those slower, more intimate moments.
That being said, busy locations don’t mean you can’t have cinematic engagement photos. It just means approaching the session a little differently and knowing how to work with the environment instead of against it. We’re here for it!

Even with the crowds, this session never felt overwhelming. We focused on finding small pockets of space, using the available light creatively, and staying locked into Sam and Chris’s energy rather than everything happening around them.
That’s one of the biggest parts of our approach. We’re not waiting for perfect conditions. We’re paying attention to what’s already there and building from it! Whether it’s reflections in the glass, shadows from the exhibits, or quick in-between moments as people pass by, there’s always something to work with.
Because Sam and Chris stayed so present with each other, everything else faded into the background. Their connection carried the entire session, and that’s what made the final images feel so immersive.
Cinematic engagement photos really hold onto movement, emotion, and the in-between moments that are easy to miss when everything is overly structured. Instead of feeling like a photoshoot, the experience becomes something you can step back into and feel all over again.

If you’re dreaming about cinematic engagement photos that feel like an experience rather than a production, you’re in the right place! Whether that means exploring a place like the Monterey Bay Aquarium or planning something completely different, we’re always down to travel.
We document sessions in a way that feels natural, story-driven, and true to who you are. No forced moments, no rigid structure, just real connection and everything that comes with it!
